Lily was on cloud nine when I walked her home after the meeting. She couldn’t stop talking about “finally doing something meaningful.” I didn’t remind her that her schoolwork was also meaningful. Mom would be sure she didn’t neglect it. It was almost lunchtime, so I made a sandwich and wrapped it in waxed paper to take back to the Herald while Lily chattered on and on to Mom about her plans for the posters. I gave Mom a quick kiss on the cheek and headed back to work.

It was going to be a busy afternoon. Roosevelt was awarding Jimmy Doolittle a Congressional Medal of Honor for leading the raid on Tokyo back in April. I was still astounded that any of the crews had made it through alive. Doolittle had definitely earned the medal. I’d assigned Rex to write that article. He’d wanted to go to Washington to cover it, but when I’d told him it wasn’t in the budget and he’d have to pay his own way, he’d decided to stay put.

The other big news of the day was that New York was suspending night baseball games. There had been a lot of controversy about cities on the East Coast being reluctant to order and enforce blackouts. The powers that be had finally decided it was better to lose a little business than risk having their cities bombed and boats off the coast torpedoed. Inland cities were getting ready to do the same.

From a block away, I noticed the lights were off at Markowicz Hardware and something red was on the door. As I got closer, the something red became more visible. I gasped when I realized what it was. Someone had painted a swastika on the door.
